Mongolian Beef

Ingredients

  • 332 g Flank steak, sliced into strips (against the grain)

  • 4 tsp Garlic

  • 5 small slices Ginger

  • 1 stalk Green onion

  • 1 Red chili pepper

  • 4 tbsp Hoisin sauce

  • 3 tbsp Soy sauce

  • 1/4 tsp Baking Soda (Bi-carb)

  • 1/4 tsp Black pepper

  • 2 tbsp Brown sugar

  • 8 tbsp Cornstarch

  • 1/2 tsp Sesame seeds

  • 2 tsp Sesame oil

  • 1/2 cup Vegetable oil

  • 1/2 cup Water

Method

  1. In a bowl mix the meat, 1 tbsp of the soy sauce, black pepper and baking soda and allow to marinate

  2. In another bowl, combine hoisin sauce, 2 tbsp soy sauce, brown sugar, sesame oil, 1 tbsp corn starch and water

  3. Heat a large pan with the vegetable oil

  4. Add the remaining 7 tbsp of corn flour to a new bowl and dredge a few pieces of beef at a time and to completely coat them

  5. Fry the beef in batches for a minute or two each side and set aside

  6. Discard excess oil reserving just about a teaspoon in the pan

  7. Saute the ginger, garlic and chilli for a minute

  8. Turn down the heat to medium and add the sauce

  9. Simmer until it thickens

  10. Add beef and mix to coat thoroughly in the sauce

  11. Garnish with spring onions and toasted sesame seeds
